Let there be inter-league play

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - It became official today in baseball (1996). There will be interleague play. For the first time in the 125-year history of major league baseball, the Cubs will play the White Sox, the Yankees will play the Mets, the Dodgers will play the Angels, the Rockies (who were not in existence yet) will play the Rangers, but let's not get overly excited.

Interleague play was part of an agreement players unanimously approved on this date in 1996 to end a nasty four-year labor agreement between players and owners that prompted a strike and cost the devotion of millions of fans.
